Early Life
The original name of 2 Chainz is Tauheed K. Epps. He was born on September 12, 1977 in College Park, Georgia. Even though Epps grew up in a poverty-stricken neighborhood, however he studied hard in high school.
He graduated being second in his class. He even played basketball and become a talented player in the early period of his youth. Epps still exhibited an unruly streak despite this, as he dealt illegal products to his classmates.
At age 15, he was arrested on crime. Epps also started getting involved in music in high school for the first time and wrote his first raps with many other classmates.
Putting aside his criminal record, still Epps was a dedicated student and he won a scholarship to Alabama State University. He played on the basketball team of his college and graduated later.
2 Chainz dismissed rumors later that he had graduated with a 4.0 GPA from university. He also briefly stated that he moved to Virginia State University. 2 Chainz showed promise and earned impressive statistics as a college basketball player.
Early Career in Music
2 Chainz adopted the stage name Tity Boi in 1997 and collaborated with his childhood friend named Earl Conyers to create a hip-hop duo, Playaz Circle. Conyers, who went famous by the name Dolla Boy, helped 2 Chainz release first independent album in 2002, “United We Stand, United We Fall”.
The album got the attention of Atlanta rapper Ludacris, who helped the duo gain notoriety by getting their tracks ready for playtime on the radio.
At that time, Ludacris was living in the same apartment and was working as a DJ, as he had not become famous yet.
Their early connection with Ludacris proved to be incredibly helpful, as the rapper in no time reconnected with Playaz Circle after becoming very successful. He convinced 2 Chainz and Dolla Boy to sign his newly formed record label named Disturbing Tha Peace.
This proved to be a launching pad for the duo, and later they released their first studio album in 2007 called “Supply & Demand”. Lead single of the album “Duffle Bag Boy” in no time became fan favorite and featured Lil’ Wayne.
At the BET Hip-Hop Awards, 2 Chainz performed the single. After the release of one more studio album, 2 Chainz left Disturbing Tha Peace and Playaz Circle to opt a solo career.
Achievements as a Solo Artist
Epps formerly known as Tity Boi changed his name to 2 Chainz in 2011, as he felt the name was more family-friendly and suitable of his upcoming career as a solo artist.
He in no time released his first album as a solo artist which was a mixtape called “T.R.U. REALigion”. With his new name and well established career as a solo artist, 2 Chainz collaborated with popular artists such as Nicki Minaj and Kanye West.
2 Chainz was ready to release his first studio album in 2012 as a solo artist. This album was entitled “Based on a T.R.U. Story”, and it involved a lead single named “No Lie” that featured Drake.
On the Billboard Top 200, this album debuted at the number one position, and it sold 147,000 units in only one week. Even though the album received mixed reviews, it was a major achievement for 2 Chainz by all other counts.
It helped him to tour internationally to sold-out crowds, and this album was also nominated for countless awards, involving three Grammys. 2 Chainz also won a many BET Hip Hop Awards for this album and he managed to secure several lucrative endorsement contracts with various brands.
He released his second studio album in 2013, “B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time”. Dolla Boy once again collaborated with 2 Chainz for the album, as did Lil’ Wayne, Fergie, Drake, Pharrell Williams, Rich Home Quan, T-Pain, and many other high-profile artists.
Even though it wasn’t as successful as “Based on a T.R.U Story”, this album received better reviews.
2 Chainz released a collaborative album in 2016 with Lil’ Wayne named “ColleGrove.” Later the year, he released other two mixtapes. 2 Chainz released his fourth studio album in 2017, “Pretty Girls Like Trap Music”.
The album once again featured collaborations with many other artists, and it was well-received. Critics stated it was his best album at that time. 2 Chainz released his another studio album in 2019 entitled “Rap Or Go To The League”.
Personal Life
2 Chainz married his girlfriend Kesha Ward in 2018. They have three children together, the eldest of them was born in 2008.
Legal Issues
2 Chainz has been arrested and charged more than once. One of the most headline situations involved 2 Chainz’s tour bus being pulled over by the police. The tour bus driver didn’t agree to let the officer search the bus.
As a result, his bus was towed to a nearby police center. A warrant was obtained eventually, and the police officers found multiple firearms on board.
Ventures Other Than as a Rapper
2 Chainz founded a clothing company that sells sweaters and hoodies. He also secured brand endorsement contracts with Beats By Dre and Adidas, to name but a few. In the College Park Skyhawks, 2 Chainz owns a minority stake.
Real Estate
2 Chainz paid $517,000 in September 2011 for a foreclosed property of 22-acre in Palmetto, Georgia. He then constructed a magnificent compound getaway on the property.
2 Chainz paid $2.5 million in 2016 for a home in LA’s Beachwood Canyon neighborhood. At one point, the home had been owned by guitarist Steve Vai who constructed a professional recording studio on the property. Artists including Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, and Eddie Van Halen have recorded at the home.
2 Chainz paid a huge $3.8 million in March 2022 for a home in the Hollywood Hills.
