Early Life

James Christian Kimmel was born on November 13, 1967 in Brooklyn, New York. He is the eldest of three children. He lived in the neighborhood of Mill Basin until the age of nine.

Then his family moved to Las Vegas. Kimmel graduated from Ed W. Clark High School and studied one year of school at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and after that two years at Arizona State University. Later, he received an honorary degree from UNLV.

Radio Career

Kimmel was inspired by David Letterman. He began working at a radio station when he was still in high school.

During his college, he continued on and landed his first paying radio job on The Me and Him Show as a morning co-host on KZOK-FM in Seattle. In 1990, he and his co-host, Kent Voss, were fired.

This happened mainly due to costly stunts both would perform on air. Kimmel decided to begin his own show in Palm Springs, California. He recruited his childhood friend Carson Daly as his intern.

Eventually, Jimmy ended up at KROQ-FM in Los Angeles and spent his five years working as Jimmy the Sports Guy on the Kevin and Bean morning show.

Comedy Central

Kimmel had no interest initially in working in Television. He started writing promotional material for Fox announcers and he was even recruited to do the on-air promotions himself.

In 1997, Kimmel was offered a place on Comedy Central’s Win Ben Stein’s Money working as the “funny everyman” comedic counterpart to Ben Stein. This duo grabbed an Emmy award for Best Game Show Host.

While still working on Win Ben Stein’s money in 1999, Kimmel co-hosted with Adam Carolla and co-produced an outstanding show named The Man Show.
