Early Life

Timbaland’s real name is Timothy Zachary Mosely. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia on March 10, 1972. Back in 1986 when Timbaland was just 14 years old, he was shot accidentally by a co-worker when working at Red Lobster.

You might be wondering, where did the name “Timbaland” came from? It was Swing who named this young rapper Timbaland. The reason behind this name was the brand called Timberland in the early 1990s. Then he released “Timbaland Presents Shock Value” in 2007 and brought out its sequel in 2009. These albums had a mix of vocalists, rock bands, and rappers.

They had a couple of major hits, like “Give It to Me” with Justin timberlake and Nelly Furtado, which reached the top position on the charts. Another one named “The Way I Are” with D.O.E. and Keri Hilson made it to number three position on the charts.

Plagiarism Accusations

Timbaland has faced some plagiarism accusations more than once. Back in January 2007, he got called out for plagiarizing several elements (both samples and motifs) in the song “Do It” from Nelly Furtado’s 2006 album “Loose.”

Timbaland and David Cortopassi, the composer of the 1967 song “Spazz,” settled things out in July 2009. They settled the matter in lieu of a lawsuit over Timbaland’s song “Throw It on Me” from his Shock Value album. So, a legal drama was avoided.

A Swiss newspaper revealed about another plagiarism accusation in January 2014. This time, it was about the song “Versus” by Jay-Z, and no other than Timbaland produced it.

Turns out, the instrumental sounded a lot like “On the Way” by a Swiss musician named Bruno Spoerri. To make things right, Jay-Z and Timbaland shared the song’s royalties, giving 50% to Spoerri as a song’s revenue, while Jay-Z retained the other 50% for his lyrics. They settled it well!
